SAS and Save the Children extend humanitarian sponsorship agreement

November 22, 2004 10:27

SAS has extended its humanitarian sponsorship agreement with the Save the Children Fund in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The agreement will apply through 2008 and means, for example, that SAS will donate SEK 6.2 M annually to Save the Children. The money will be used for work on children’s rights.

“The financial support that SAS donates annually for our work is highly appreciated. The contribution will make an enormous difference to the many children who need our help,” says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, Secretary General of the Save the Children Fund

The cooperation between the SAS Group and the Scandinavian Save the Children organizations began as far back as 1998. During this time, SAS has been the main sponsor of the Save the Children Fund in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Experience from this agreement period will further strengthen the work in the future.

The support from SAS has been highly significant for Save the Children’s work for children in war and child refugees. In Northern Uganda, a bloody civil war is raging and, in the past 18 months, 24,000 children under the age of 18 have been kidnapped from their homes and forced to become child soldiers or sex slaves in the rebel army. The financial support from SAS provides Save the Children possibilities to assist the children who have succeeded in fleeing to a better life.

“At SAS, we are very aware that we, as a company, must take our social responsibility. We want our customers and employees to know that they are flying with and working for an airline that cares about human lives. Save the children has the knowledge about where help is most needed and can make a difference. This is why SAS has chosen to continue to support them financially,” says Anders Ehrling, President of Scandinavian Airlines Sweden.
