SAS Group’s airline companies the only ones in the world with ISO 14001 and EMAS environmental certification

September 23, 2010 15:28

The SAS Group today received ISO 14001 and EMAS certification from Bureau Veritas. This means that the SAS Group (which includes SAS, Blue1 and Widerøe) is the only one in the world to have both certificates. The air freight business, SAS Cargo, was already ISO 14001 certified and has now added EMAS.“The SAS Group now holds two internationally recognized environmental certificates, covering all aspects of the SAS Group’s business – everything from flight operations to administration. That makes us unique in the world,” says Lars Andersen Resare, the SAS Group’s Environmental Director.

The SAS Group has a clear environmental policy, and associated environmental objectives. By 2020, the relative release of climate-changing emissions must be halved per unit produced compared with 2006. Converted into absolute numbers, this means that total emissions must fall by 20%, assuming a 4% growth in passenger numbers during the same period. This will be done by continuing to work on improvements, based on the business’s environmental management system, increased energy efficiency, renewal of the aircraft fleet, more efficient flight management, and a low admixture of biofuels based on sustainable and renewable sources.

“Many of our customers, particularly corporate customers, demand environmentally certified products and services. We can now offer these, which further strengthens our position as one of the most environmentally aware airlines on the market,” says Robin Kamark, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at SAS.

The environment is not the only winner thanks to the mode of working required by an environmental management system. It also lays the foundations for reducing the company’s costs. A specific example is SAS’s fuel savings project, which reported a saving of about 4.3% by the end of 2009 compared with 2005.

“The SAS organization has done an enormous job to ensure effective implementation of the environmental management system,” says Klaus Behrndt, Lead Auditor at Bureau Veritas.

ISO 14001 in brief
ISO is a standards organization that works at international level. The aim of the ISO 14001 standard is to map out and reduce the company’s environmental impact, and to ensure that there is an efficient management system in place that also includes the business’s environmental activities.

EMAS in brief
EMAS is part of the EU Commission’s action program, “Towards Sustainable Development”. In addition to what is already covered by ISO 14001, EMAS requires that all employees are involved in environmental work, and that the most important environmental aspects and the company’s environmental performance are published. For further information, please contact
